Sculpture
Everything we do and understand is comprised
of one meaning and its opposite. A window can be both a
frame for the view beyond or a barrier against the
elements. A doorway offers both threshold into a new space
and invitation to return home. Our appreciation of beauty
is in part defined by our individual definition of what we
consider ugly. I am intrigued by this intersection of
opposites and the choices we make to move in one direction
or another. The ceramic materials with which I work allow
me to explore this tension.
Are my hand built components serving as
bricks or windows? Which is more important the space
occupied or framed? As with most situations, the answer
depends on the perspective of the viewer.
