My work stems in part, from childhood
memories of time spent in my grandmother’s sewing room.
While she wove and stitched I sorted through her button box,
wove linen book marks and explored old family photo albums.
My material, though, is soft
porcelain. Chameleon-like, it changes as it responds to the
touch of my hand or the imposition of a tool. It is
temperamental and predictable, fluid and resilient.
Working with these contrasting characteristics I can shape
my slabs into undulating forms that suggest fabric or
figure, tells stories, and evoke the luscious, quixotic
nature of the clay itself.
Like the old family photos, though
there is more than one side to the work. Softness
meets strength, comedy dances with grace, crisp edges melt
into soft corners. Knowing the other half of the
story, or at least knowing there’s more than meets the eye,
brings a little humor to a formal tea party, a little
richness to a casual mug of coffee.
